Cowboys welcome Randy Gregory back with an extension

NFL: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys A reward for keeping the faith. | Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

After the years away from the game for Randy Gregory, it must be good to get some money up front.

According to a report from Todd Archer of ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys have signed Randy Gregory to a one year extension, with a $200,000 signing bonus. This is the second time they have sought to extend him but were unable to get approval previously.

Gregory and the Cowboys agreed to a similar extension last season, but the NFL disapproved it because suspended players cannot sign new contracts.

As Archer notes, the team has essentially fronted Gregory some money after he has not earned anything during his prolonged suspension from football. It is no doubt a welcome infusion of cash for the player, while the extension also expresses faith on behalf of the team that he will be able to stay in good graces and contribute after he is able to return to the field. That could come as early as week 7. Gregory will join an already loaded group of pass rushers, potentially giving Dallas one of the most formidable defensive fronts in the NFL.

It is also interesting to note that the unofficial depth chart from the mothership has a new position, designated pass rusher.

That is currently how Aldon Smith and Dorance Armstrong are listed, but it is a good bet that Gregory could be used in this role.

This looks like a good deal for all involved, with some very interesting possibilities for the future.
