Cuts are coming this weekend and there will surely be some surprises.
Every season there are some surprises heading into the final roster cuts, and 2020 should be no different. In fact, given the lack of preseason games and the craziness of the offseason, there could be a lot of moves that seem contrary to what fans would expect the team to do when constructing the final 53-man roster.
Last year saw Bob Quinn cut seventh-round picks Isaac Nauta and P.J. Johnson, while Charles Washington and Andrew Adams were potential options that also did not make the squad. Of course, the big move was parting ways with former second-round pick Teez Tabor, who never was able to live up to expectations.
What will this year’s surprises be? The Lions kept three quarterbacks last season and it looks like that will be the case again. The fullback position appears to still be alive, and the punter battle could come down to who has the best personality. Regardless of how it shakes out, there will be some interesting decisions that come to light this weekend.
Today’s Question of the Day is:
What is one surprising roster decision you think the Lions will make?
My answer: Like many people, I think the Lions go with four running backs, plus Jason Cabinda at fullback. D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Johnson are clearly locks, and I would expect the duo to take up the majority of the touches. However, the surprise I see comes in the last two spots. One should go to Jason Huntley, who has been a little knocked up this camp, but has plenty of potential and is a great third option.
The fourth spot I think goes to more of a power runner, which means I have Ty Johnson out. I am not sure if it should be Bo Scarbrough, Jonathan Williams, or someone else who takes his place (the fact the team worked out D’Onta Foreman shows how they value this type of back), but whoever it is will possess a different skill set than both Huntley and Ty Johnson. It will be a bummer to lose him, and he performed decently in 2019, but he is no longer needed to fill out the position group.
