Cutdown weekend saw the New England Patriots reduce their roster from 77 to 53 players. Of the 24 men who did not make the team’s initial roster, 16 did eventually find their way back via the practice squad: the Patriots officially announced the first iteration of its developmental roster on Sunday night even though some changes will soon follow if recent reports are an indication.

For the time being, however, the Patriots’ practice squad looks as follows:

Practice squad

LB/TE Rashod Berry, LB Tashawn Bower, CB Myles Bryant, TE Jake Burt, K Nick Folk, LB Terez Hall, LB Cassh Maluia, DT Bill Murray, TE Paul Quessenberry, K Justin Rohrwasser, CB D’Angelo Ross, WR Devin Ross, RB J.J. Taylor, DT Nick Thurman, DT Xavier Williams, WR Isaiah Zuber

The majority of the names listed above were already reported throughout the course of the day. In fact, only one of them was not yet known: outside linebacker Tashawn Bower, who spent the second half of the 2019 regular season on New England’s practice squad, is a new addition to the list — replacing a spot that was previously believed to go to rookie wide receiver Mason Kinsey as the Patriots’ lone outside addition over the weekend.

Kinsey is still expected to join the team at one point, however, as is fellow undrafted rookie wideout Kristian Wilkerson (who coincidentally both started their pro careers with the Tennessee Titans earlier this year). Of course, the Patriots will need to create additional spots on their 16-player practice squad to bring them aboard.

The most realistic scenario is that the team will move two players from its active roster to the injured reserve list. Given that an unlimited number of players can be brought back from IR this season after as early as three weeks, the Patriots could decide to place two of defensive tackle Beau Allen, wide receiver Gunner Olszewski and running back Damien Harris to the short-term list with the plan of reactivating them sooner rather than later.

This, in turn, would create open spots on the 53-man team which could be filled by practice squad promotions — which would then open up scout team spots for Kinsey and Wilkerson. This is all speculation from the current perspective, but it seems certain that some follow-up transactions will soon be made by the club to bring the two rookies aboard.

Eight other players, meanwhile, remain unaccounted for after being let go by the Patriots on Saturday: quarterback Brian Lewerke, running back Lamar Miller, wide receivers Jeff Thomas and Andre Baccellia, tight end Paul Butler, offensive linemen Ben Braden and Tyler Gauthier, and linebacker De’Jon Harris remain on the open market. Harris, however, is expected to join the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in the near future.
