Detroit Lions place Mike Ford on IR

The Lions veteran cornerback will miss at least the first three weeks of the season.

With the Lions re-signing Oday Aboushi and adding running back Adrian Peterson, we were waiting to hear from the team what the two corresponding moves would be to make room on their 53-man roster. Detroit answered one of those questions on Sunday evening, officially announcing the Aboushi signing while placing cornerback Mike Ford on injured reserve.

It’s a small surprise to see Ford placed on IR. Late in camp, he suffered an ankle injury, but head coach Matt Patricia downplayed the injury the following day.

“Mike Ford rolled his ankle a little bit yesterday, he’s just tender today, so I’m just going to hold him out and get him back here for the start of next week,” Patricia said last Saturday.

Ford did indeed return to practice the following week and did not appear to be too limited during individual drills of practice.

With new IR rules, Ford can return to practice in just three weeks time. In the meantime, the Lions already have a lot of depth at cornerback with six other players currently on their 53-man roster: Jeff Okudah, Desmond Trufant, Justin Coleman, Amani Oruwariye, Tony McRae, Darryl Roberts. They also have Dee Virgin on the practice squad.

The Lions have yet to officially announce the Adrian Peterson signing nor a corresponding move to fit him on the roster.
