LA apparently does need another running back prior to Week 1

Raymond Calais has had quite a weekend. The undrafted free agent rookie running back was cut by the Buccaneers on Saturday, added to their practice squad on Sunday and then later on the same day was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams to put on their 53-man roster. Calais has gone from the most crowded running back room in the league over in Tampa Bay to potentially being one play away from getting snaps for the Rams.

Calais, 5’8 and 188 pounds, rushed for 886 yards on 117 carries with Louisiana last season. He averaged over eight yards per carry in his final two seasons combined. But Calais went undrafted and signed with the Bucs. Tampa Bay already had Ronald Jones, LeSean McCoy and drafted Ke’Shawn Vaughn in the third round, but then also signed Leonard Fournette last week.

The Rams picked Cam Akers in round two this year and kept undrafted free agent Xavier Jones, as well as Malcolm Brown again, but with each passing moment it seems less likely that Darrell Henderson will be ready for Week 1 and Los Angeles still needs to make a corresponding move to open up a roster spot; they had 52 players but then traded for linebacker Justin Hollins.

Calais is expected to be able to contribute on returns, an area that could still be a competition weeks into the season.

Barely 24 hours after their initial 53-man roster, already the Rams have made a couple of moves.
