More bad news at corner for Minnesota
There’s more bad news at the cornerback position for the Minnesota Vikings.
On Friday, the team announced that cornerback Mike Hughes was being placed on injured reserve because of the neck injury he’s been dealing with. To take his place on the 53-man roster, the team has signed safety Curtis Riley from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad.
Hughes suffered a neck injury that ended his season last season in the meaningless regular season finale against the Chicago Bears, an injury that caused him to miss both of the team’s playoff games. According to Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the injury that Hughes suffered was a cracked vertebrae, and while this aggravation is related to that, there is no new fracture. With that being the case, the team placing him on IR may not necessarily end his season.
Riley entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2015, and the Vikings are his sixth NFL team. He started his career with the Tennessee Titans, the team he signed with as a UDFA, being a part of their team for three seasons. He then played for the New York Giants in 2018, where he started all 16 games.
Riley then moved on to the Oakland Raiders in 2019. In 2020, he wound up on the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Cardinals poached him off of their practice squad on September 17. The Cardinals released him and brought him back to the practice squad in early October.
For his career, Riley has played in 47 games with 20 starts. He’s collected five interceptions during that time, including one that he returned for a touchdown in 2019 for the Raiders.
Things continue to be rough at the cornerback position for the Minnesota Vikings, which is not a good state to be in when you’re heading to Lambeau Field. When we get more news on the Hughes injury, we will bring it to you here.
