The former superstar kicker has been anything but this season.
It’s a hard conversation to have. They say, however, that the first step to recovery is admitting that you have a problem. The Lions have many problems right now, and Matt Prater is slowly rising up that list.
It hurts to say, especially after the years of unreal clutch kicks that we, as Lions fans, have enjoyed. Let this conversation not tarnish Prater’s legacy as one of the best to do it.
Question of the day: Are you ready to let Matt Prater go?
My answer: Not quite, but we’re close.
What’s the quote from Batman? You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain. Prater is toeing that line now.
At the end of the day, it’s pretty clear that 2020 is a lost season for the Lions. I know this is a business, but I think Prater deserves the respect of being able to finish this season when the Lions have very little to lose. It’s not like the free agent options in Week 10 of the season will be a huge upgrade anyways. As a 36-year-old kicker, however, the writing is on the wall, no matter how good you once were.
That’s not to say that Prater’s in his last season for sure. There’s a very real chance he can rebound to a resemblance of his former self in 2021. However, this is the final year of Prater’s contract in Detroit, and next year’s draft will require serious consideration to a solid college kicker who can come in and compete. If Prater is even around, he’ll likely have serious competition, but he hasn’t given the Lions much reason in 2020 to even get that far.
What do you think?
