The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially cut veteran safety Tashaun Gipson.

Gipson has been an above-average starter for the Jaguars, but Jarrod Wilson has quietly been very good filling in as a starter over the last few weeks of the season. While Gipson is probably the better player, I’m not sure that he is $8.5 million better — Gipson has a $9 million cap hit next year while Wilson’s cap hit is $631,000.
We needed to save money against the cap this season and cutting Gipson while retaining Wilson was one way to do it.
I’m surprised, however, the team wasn’t able to find someone willing to give us a Day 2 pick for him.
Gipson played and started all 48 career games in Jacksonville, totally six interceptions, 16 passes defended, five tackles for a loss, and one fumble recovery.
