Jaguars have options in direction to take with quarterbacks coach, only two vacancies remain
With Jacksonville filling their vacant offensive coordinator after hiring Jay Gruden, Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone will take on a new responsibility immediately — finding the team’s next quarterbacks coach. Former Jaguars quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich announced shortly before the season ended he would be accepting an opportunity to become the head coach of the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos.
Marrone emphasized a collective effort with Gruden to fill the team’s vacant position coaching slot. There will also be a decision to be made on whether or not Gruden could simply man both the coordinator and quarterbacks coach position, something Marrone is familiar with doing.
“I’ve done it both ways where the coordinator has been the quarterback coach before,” Marrone said via conference call on Wednesday when asked if Gruden could possibly take on both roles. “When you go that way, then you just have to have really good support around the coordinator, more logistic support.”
Having one coach assigned at the position would put a lot on the coordinator’s plate. For the Jaguars, taking away responsibilities and not having anyone to take the pressure off could prove detrimental — especially for such a young offense.
“I’ve also gone the other way where now you have the quarterback coach that is out there working, and those guys have to be really in line. I’m talking about step-by-step of there’s certain ways that we believe that we want to teach our quarterback, so we discussed it, Jay and I spoke this morning on it.”
On Wednesday, Marrone stressed a collective effort, everyone being in lock-step is essential for a smooth running engine — something the team has not necessarily had over Marrone’s run as head coach of the team.
With a decision yet to be made, the Jaguars want to provide Gruden with the most comfortable situation possible. Having an assistant coach who is in tune with how Gruden and Marrone want to run the ship will be important moving forward with Minshew II as the team’s starting quarterback.
“At the end of the day, we’re going to do what’s best for the players and the staff. So, it’s really an option. We’re not leaning one way or the other.”
The Jaguars still have yet to fill their assistant running backs coaching position as well after former assistant running backs coach John Donovan accepted an opportunity to become the Washington Huskies’ offensive coordinator shortly after the season ended. Marrone acknowledged that the team has two position coaching spots left to fill. It is not yet known when either will come to fruition but Marrone has already shown he is willing to wait for the right person to come into the spotlight rather than rush a decision.
