What are the most played out storylines leading up to the Super Bowl?

It took roughly 24 hours to get sick of the 49ers-Packers storylines leading up to the NFC Championship. You’d think San Francisco was the lone team to pass on life-long fan Aaron Rodgers. Now we have the Kansas City Chiefs, and I believe there are quite a few intriguing storylines. There are the two best offensive play-callers in the NFL in Kyle Shanahan and Andy Reid. Both are brilliant, but I’d give Kyle the slight edge as he continuously puts his players in the best position to succeed. We have the two fastest teams in the NFL. The Super Bowl could turn into a track meet with all the speed on the field. We also have, in my opinion, the lone defense to counter the Chiefs offense. ESPN’s Ryan Clark called it the perfect defense against the perfect quarterback. Here’s a fun fact that: The Chiefs allowed fewer points (308) than the 49ers (310) did this season, while San Francisco scored more (479) scored more than Kansas City (451.)

On the flip side, there are quite a few storylines that will unfold during the interviews leading up to the game next week if they haven’t happened already. We’ve previously discussed one of them. Dee Ford and how he jumped offsides as a member of the Chiefs during last year’s playoffs.

Four Potential storylines

When you put a mic in front of George Kittle, he’s going to produce gold. The same can be said for Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. These two are comfortably the best tight ends in the NFL. Both are quirky, goofy, and put on a show. It’ll be interesting to see how this storyline unfolds.

You just know Richard Sherman is going to have this us (me?) against the world mentality. Somebody is going to ask him about the Darrelle Revis tweets, and it’s going to turn into the greatest two minute tangent of all-time.

I do wonder how much of Tyreek Hill and Frank Clark’s past will be a story this year. With it being the 100th season, I got the sense from a few media members that the NFL will want this game to be as “clean” as possible. These players are put under the magnifying glass, which means its only a matter of time before someone asks. My money is on a reporter that doesn’t cover either team.

The final story will be how the 49ers passed on Patrick Mahomes for Solomon Thomas. There were a handful of people in the football community that projected Mahomes to be a top-10 quarterback in the league. I know this because I was one of the few screaming into the abyss how good Mahomes was in college:

I was obnoxiously high on Mahomes, and there was no way anyone knew he’d be this good. The 49ers just played a likely Hall of Fame quarterback, and Mahomes has a higher ceiling. That’s crazy to say out loud, but it’s true. Sure, the 49ers should have taken Mahomes. They have their quarterback, and San Francisco is in the Super Bowl. What else matters? Look at the teams that passed on Mahomes. The Browns, Bears, Jaguars, Titans, Jets, Chargers, Panthers, and Bengals. I’d love to hear the argument for one of those teams not regretting passing on Mahomes. Hindsight is 20/20.
