Pro Football Focus Grades Texans In Loss To Giants

Pro Football Focus provides a quick write-up on every game, but they aren’t able to finish their charting until Monday night. So the recap action here on BRB will now bleed a little bit into Tuesday. This is what PFF had to say about the Texans’ loss to the Giants.

OFFENSE - Deshaun Watson continued to improve, earning an 84.4 overall grade for his play against the Giants. Watson was 19-19 for 296 yards and two touchdowns when throwing between the numbers, and 5-15 for 89 yards and one interception when throwing elsewhere. The second-year quarterback was also good under pressure, completing 12 of 19 attempts for 214 yards, a touchdown and an interception- good for a 92.0 overall grade.

- The offensive line continues to be an issue, and Senio Kelemete injuring his knee during warm-ups wasn’t the worst of it. Rookie Martinas Rankin continued to struggle, allowing eight total pressures. Julie’n Davenport had a rough day as well, allowing five pressures including a sack, and drew four penalties. On a brighter note, Mancz did an admirable job filling in posting an 86.0 pass-blocking grade, while Fulton held down the opposite guard spot with a 79.2 pass-blocking grade. The run-blocking was less than satisfactory though, with these two guards posting run-blocking grades of 37.4 and 31.5, respectively.

DEFENSE - J.J. Watt continues to show he has plenty left in the tank and can still perform at an elite level. He tallied three sacks, two hits and two hurries which accounted for 70% of the 10 total pressures by the Texans. He dominated the Giants’ offensive line on the way to a 92.4 overall grade, good for second among edge defenders.

- The Texans’ pass defense, simply put, just has to be better. The defense as a whole was targeted 28 times and allowed 25 of those attempts to be completed. The only two defenders who were able to force incompletions were Joseph (2) and Mathieu (1 PBU). Every other defender allowed every single target thrown their way. The worst of the bunch on Sunday were Zach Cunningham (6-6 for 59 yards and 1 TD) and Aaron Colvin (5-5 for 57 yards). The Texans have to find a way to generate pressures from someone other than Watt, or manage to force more incompletions and contested catch situations.
