Smith and Devey appear to be done for the year, while Sorensen is just getting back.
Kansas City Chiefs head athletic trainer and vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder spoke in front of the local Kansas City media Wednesday morning to discuss all the Chiefs injury-related roster moves from Tuesday.
He specifically discussed the injuries to linebacker Terrance Smith, offensive lineman Jordan Devey and safety Daniel Sorensen. Smith and Devey were placed on injured reserve Tuesday. Sorensen returned to practice on Wednesday.
Here’s the latest from Burkholder:
LB Terrance Smith (torn ACL)
BURKHOLDER: “Terrance Smith, on a kickoff coverage play—he had a non-contact injury where the main damage to his right knee was his ACL. He tore his ACL. He also has some involvement on the lateral and posterior portion of that knee, so right now, he’s working on swelling, a range of motion, and him and his agent and our medical staff are working through who will operate on him, but he’ll need to be surgically repaired, and you know—with those ACLs, it’s an extended period of time for recovery.”
OL Jordan Devey (torn pectoralis major)
BURKHOLDER: “Jordan came to me in the first quarter of the game and he had a right-arm-shoulder problem. He had a big laceration and pretty significant cleat mark on his right arm. He felt like he could play. We felt like could play, and he came in after the game. We tested him again and we decided to get an MRI because things didn’t add up—it looked like he got stepped on. It turned out with the MRI that he had a right pectoralis major tear, and that also needs to be repaired, so he’s going to be repaired [Thursday] morning by Dr. Schroeppel, our team orthopedist at Kansas University Health System at Indian Creek campus out in Overland Park, so he’ll get that fixed up [Thursday].”
S Daniel Sorensen (returned to practice Wednesday from tibial plateau fracture)
BURKHOLDER: “If you remember, back in training camp, Dan had a left-knee tibial plateau fracture, which was repaired on August 8. He’s ready to return to practice, and there’s some rules there where he can practice and he’s not eligible play until next week (Week 8). However, we have three weeks here to practice him and decide what to do with him—whether to activate him on the roster or return him to injured reserve, so this will be a trial period. We’re taking this period of time where he practices as a rehab session, so we’ll probably give you an update when we need to update you on Dan.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that the team is going to let Sorensen “ease in.”
“I haven’t thought of expectations right now at all other than he’s able to go out there and get acclimated again,” Reid said. “It won’t be with the first group—that’s not what he’s doing. He’ll work some scout team things and get himself acclimated and ease into getting back at speed.”
