Should the Chiefs trade for Patrick Peterson?

The hottest topic in Kansas City sports is just one of the items tackled by the AP Nerd Squad this week.

The rumors are heating up across the NFL in regard to the availability and interest of a Patrick Peterson trade. The Kansas City Chiefs have been mentioned as a team looking into the feasibility.

How does the AP Nerd Squad feel about it making the move? Should the Chiefs use their 2019 first round pick to acquire him? We talked about it on this week’s episode of the AP Laboratory.

MATT LANE: “All I care about going into the draft next year I want to have the flexibility to be able to move around wherever I want to which includes up in the draft. This draft class is great for EDGE and interior defensive lineman and I think the Chiefs are going to need major help at both of those. So if the Chiefs get rid of their first round pick this year and a second or their first next year they’re just limiting themselves so much in the ability to move up and you’re going to be stuck with your last guy on the list that just happens to fall.”

I mentioned that a 2019 first-round pick for Peterson is a little too rich for me, partially because of the flexibility Matt mentioned. If the Cardinals were to throw in Haason Reddick in a buy low scenario as well then I’m tempted. The idea of 3.5 years of a talent in Reddick to go with 2.5 years of Peterson would make me willing to part with that premium asset.

Craig Stout thinks that had the Chiefs definitively hit on a pass rusher in previous drafts, he would feel comfortable with a first round pick price.

CRAIG STOUT: “The thing that really swings in the balance here: If they had hit on Tanoh Kpassagnon or Breeland Speaks, that makes this a lot easier to swallow. I think that they need another pass rusher because they’re going to lose either Dee Ford or Justin Houston this offseason. I think they have to have another guy over there and then they’re also losing Allen Bailey probably so they need another interior defensive lineman. I think the pass misses have made it hard to trade away a first round pick this year.”

We talk more about Peterson, if we’d rather have Landon Collins instead, plus plenty of Dorian O’Daniel discussion and more on this week’s episode of the AP Laboratory. If you can’t see the player below, click here.
