Former Colts QB Dan Orlovsky sounds off on Frank Reich’s offense

Dan Orlovsky played a pivotal role in the Indianapolis Colts gaining Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL Draft. Now he believes the new look of his former team, thanks in large part to Luck, is close to being an elite team.

The key word is close.

“By next year, that offense is going be a big time problem for defenses,” Orlovsky told the Indianapolis Star. “First of all, I think the world of Frank Reich, so that’s part of it. Second, this offensive line will be one of the best in football next year. ... (And Andrew) Luck looks very, very good. He’s throwing the ball well and making great decisions. He’s super accurate, and he looks like the Andrew Luck we thought he would be. And he’s doing this with a lot of secondary pieces.”

Luck is second in the league when it comes to passing touchdowns, trailing behind Patrick Mahomes (22) for the top spot with 20. The former Colts quarterback knows T.Y. Hilton is without a doubt a No. 1 option at wide receiver. The other weapons Luck has at his disposal at receiver? Well it’s questionable, according to Orlovsky.

“I’m a (Chester) Rogers fan,” Orlovsky said. “I think you can find a place for him on your team in the future. I’m a Ryan Grant fan. But the thing is, each of those guys is being asked to be one spot above their level. Ryan Grant is a WR3, not a WR2. Rogers is a WR4 not a WR3.

”The one piece that is missing from this team is that real game-changing, big-time talented wide receiver to make it just a little easier on T.Y.”

With the NFL trade deadline quickly approaching, the Colts could be in the market for trading draft capital to add to Luck’s personnel. But with Chris Ballard’s history, that probably won’t happen.
