Golden Tate ‘optimistic’ for a long-term deal in Detroit amidst trade rumors

Golden Tate isn’t buying NFL Network’s report.

It wouldn’t be a trade deadline without rumors that didn’t have any legs to stand on. Earlier in the day, NFL Network was reporting that the Detroit Lions were fielding calls regarding a trade for Golden Tate. While Tom Pelissero admitted it was unlikely a trade will ever happen, he did speculate that if someone offered a mid-round draft pick, the Lions may jump on the opportunity.

Not only is Golden Tate doubting these rumors, he’s going in the opposite direction. Monday, he told the Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett that he believes he’s made progress with the Lions toward an extension. Via Birkett:

But Tate said Monday he’s still optimistic he can get a long-term deal done to stay in Detroit and the two sides have moved “closer” to an extension since the start of the season.

”Ask (the front office about it), and then I’ll speak on it,” Tate said. “But I don’t want to be the one—I don’t want to draw too much attention in season to all that stuff.”

As for the Pelissero report, Tate told Birkett he just doesn’t see a trade happening.

“I don’t think so. I feel like I’m a huge part of this organization and this offense especially, so hopefully that’s not the case,” Tate said.

He even expressed his doubts on Twitter, responding directly to the NFL Network report regarding the New England Patriots expressing interest in his services:

With the trade deadline less than 24 hours away now—4 p.m. ET on Tuesday—the wait won’t be a lengthy one to see where the Lions wideout will be for Week 9.

Even if Tate does get traded, he knows this is just how the league works.

“I do understand it’s a business and if it happens then, you know, depends on where they send me.”
