Jets Coaching Candidate of the Day: Pete Carmichael, Jr.

With Todd Bowles likely on the way out at the end of the season, we are going to take a look at some of the potential candidates to replace him. Whenever we do something like this, there are some typical criticisms that always pop up like, “Why profile this guy? He stinks!” and “He won’t be interested.” We aren’t just profiling the good candidates or suggesting these people are all likely to take the job. We are simply looking at people the Jets could reasonably expected to call.

Today’s candidate: Pete Carmichael, Jr.

Category: NFL Assistant

Current Job: New Orleans Saints Offensive Coordinator

Years of NFL Coaching Experience: 19

Head Coaching Experience: None

Ties to Jets: None

Pros:

  • Sean Payton’s longtime right hand man.
  • Has coordinated one of the most successful offenses in the league for almost a decade.
  • Owns one of the league’s best designed offenses.
  • Saints offense stayed productive when circumstances (injury/suspension) forced Payton to hand over play calling duties to him.
  • Has been adaptable building scheme around the talents of his players.

Cons:

  • In spite of the success of his offense and in Payton’s absence, questions will linger about where Payton’s influence ends, and where Carmichael’s begins.
  • Has never developed a quarterback.
  • No head coaching experience.
  • Philosophies outside of offensive gameplanning are unknown.

The Bottom Line:

There has been some buzz that Carmichael will get a look from the Jets. To be honest I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten a chance to run his own team yet. Perhaps teams are hesitant to give him too much credit with Sean Payton and Drew Brees in New Orleans.

Carmichael is kind of a blank slate. The jump from coordinator to head coach is always filled with unknowns. With that said, I think he has earned the chance to run his own team. I wouldn’t object to the Jets going in this direction if Carmichael sold an impressive vision in his interview.
