No moral victory as Oakland falls in most power rankings after loss to Chiefs

Though the Raiders played a good team tough, they still lost when the clock struck zero. With that loss comes the fall in the power rankings again. Couple that with the Arizona Cardinals surprise win against the Packers and several outlets dropped Oakland to last place again in their rankings.

Not the mothership site though, SB Nation went another direction entirely by playfully ranking the teams by their writer’s own bias instead of the usual best to worst power rankings. That one ranking ballooned the average for the week so that it actually technically went up, but if not for that random ranking they would have dropped from last week’s 30.375 average.

"We don’t watch games so we can be bored by them or because we get off on being disappointed. We watch the NFL because it’s fun, and some teams are way more fun to watch than others. Sometimes teams are fun to watch because we have a special connection to them. Sometimes they’re good TV because they score a gazillion points. Sometimes they’re fun to watch because we LOVE to see them fail, like Jon Gruden and the Raiders.

All of that is my long winded introduction to a new spin on the ol’ NFL power rankings this week — ranking teams according to my own personal biases."

"The pundits thought there was no way the Raiders could keep up with the Chiefs' track team Sunday. False. Say what you want about Jon Gruden, but the locker room is still competing for him. Oakland wasn't far off, as they came a stop on third-and-goal away from making matters realllllllllllllllll interesting against the NFL's scariest offense. Derek Carr deserves your respect out there on that field, too, as he performed at a high level despite his most reliable receiver being journeyman tight end Jared Cook, and with no hoss on offense capable of taking over a game. Marcell Ateman, Jalen Richard, Cook ... they're all nice spot players, but they'd have difficulty starting for many other teams. Carr put up 33 with those fellas."

"We're (almost) No. 1 in: Batted passes. All has not been lost in a star-crossed season for the Raiders, who are tied for the worst record in the NFL with the 49ers at 2-10. While Oakland has only the No. 28-ranked total defense, the Raiders do fly around the ball ... at times. They are third in the league in batted passes (13) and fourth in pass breakups (41), which includes batted passes, passes defensed and tipped passes. That is something the rebuilding Raiders can, well, build upon under coach Jon Gruden and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther. -- Paul Gutierrez

"Only in Oakland could a seven-point loss be the best possible outcome for a game.

It's been that kind of year for the Raiders.

It's true, though. Sure, upsetting the mighty Chiefs in Week 13 would have been a big morale boost for the last-place Raiders. But it wouldn't change anything; the obituary for this mess of a season was written weeks ago.

But hanging with the Chiefs for most of Sunday's game gives the team a shot in the arm without lousing up the Raiders' chances of securing the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft. Right now, the only thing standing between the Raiders and that pick is the 49ers.

It's been quite the year for Bay Area football.

There were things the team can hang its hat on as well, including Derek Carr's 285 passing yards and three scores and Jared Cook's 100-yard receiving day with a TD.

The Raiders need difference-makers on both sides of the ball a lot more than a meaningless win in December.

It's cynical. Maybe even a little macabre. But it's true."

"The Raiders are much healthier than the 49ers are in terms of actual NFL playing bodies. But they are either too old or too young at key positions, so it’s helpful they are all but guaranteed the No. 1 overall pick."
