Former Lions OC Jim Bob Cooter to interview for Browns OC job

Jim Bob may land on his feet immediately.

While we continue to play the wait-and-see game for who will be the Detroit Lions’ new offensive coordinator, the team’s old offensive coordinator could be on the move shortly. The newly-fired Jim Bob Cooter will be interviewing for the Cleveland Browns’ vacancy at offensive coordinator—left by the promotion of Freddie Kitchens from that spot to head coach.

Cooter is likely still an attractive option for certain franchises, especially ones like the Browns that have a young, moldable quarterback. For as panned as Cooter was during his time as offensive coordinator over the past two years, his work improving Matthew Stafford from previous regimes is well documented. Before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2015, Cooter was Stafford’s quarterback coach for a year and a half. When he took over as offensive coordinator, Stafford’s improvement was obvious.

Given that Kitchens will likely still have a pretty strong grasp of the Browns’ offense, pairing Cooter with Baker Mayfield makes a lot of sense. Of course, this is just an interview. The Browns have not made any sort of indications that Cooter is their guy.
