Smith served as the Chiefs outside linebackers coach in 2018 after spending the 2016 and 2017 seasons as an assistant defensive line coach under former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.
Under Smith in 2018, Dee Ford, Justin Houston and Breeland Speaks combined for 22.5 sacks.
“Mike is great,” Ford said earlier this season. “He is a student of the game. Everything is repetitive. Every day, we do the same thing and we are getting better at smaller things. It is crazy, we’ve played for so many years, and Justin (Houston) and I talk all the time with our steps being awful at times. We are just so athletic and strong we can just get away with it. But now, having that coach, Mike is phenomenal.”
A small Mike Smith story. When Dee Ford cleaned out his locker Monday, he carried a framed photo of himself & Mike Smith. Smith autographed the photo. "You had an amazing year!" Smith wrote in his message to Ford. Perhaps the men knew then they wouldn't be together next season.

Smith joins Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s staff shortly after the Chiefs announced Steve Spagnuolo as their new defensive coordinator.
It remains to be seen what happens with the rest of Sutton’s former staff.
