For Fangio and his new coaches, it’s all about teaching. That’s how “death by inches” is removed from the Broncos.

Putting weight on news conferences is a dicey proposition.
But when you see a consistent theme start to unfold, you don’t have a choice – as has been the case since Vic Fangio was hired by the Denver Broncos. In fact, it happened before Fangio said a word as the 17th head coach in franchise history.
This ties into that, but also signals an end to what has hounded this franchise for some time. What stood out to me in Fangio’s introductory news conference, and the coordinators’ news conference earlier this week: Accountability, adaptability, attention to detail, evolving, forward-thinking. But the biggest is they are teachers and love to teach.

“So far, I couldn’t be more excited to work with a group of coaches that’s just ... their temperaments, their detail, I can tell it’s going to be a great staff,” new Broncos offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello told the media. “I think coach Fangio has a vision for what he sees in coaches. And I think a big part of that is you have to be a great teacher, you have to be detailed.
“I’m very fortunate to be able to work with (new offensive line coach) Mike Munchak. The conversations we’ve had so far, he’s one of the best line coaches in the league. He’s got a wealth of knowledge, and it’s exciting to be able to team up with that and help the Denver Broncos offense be what it can be.”
When new coaches come aboard, you expect to hear great talking points. If you don’t, the team is in major trouble. So skepticism is a good thing. “Show me results on the field, win games, and then talk to me.”
In the same breath, what we’re hearing from Fangio and his staff should excite fans. Fangio seems to have a vision for what he wants and the coaches he’s hired seem to be on the same page. When we hear “death by inches,” that means from the coaches too.
I was stoked about the hiring of Fangio, now with the staff he’s comprised and the buy-in/synergy he has from them, I can’t wait to see what happens on the field.
“(Fangio) is just talking about the little things,” new defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said when asked what “death by inches” means. “They add up and he doesn’t want them to turn into big things. If he wants you touching the line in the drill, he wants that. He wants you in alignment in a certain place, he wants your eyes to be where they’re supposed to be and he wants people to be responsible to the team.”
