The Redskins are a team with a lot of holes, but not a lot of cap space to fill them all. The 2019 draft will have to be where the team hangs its hat to find young, inexpensive talent, but to remain competitive, they will need to be semi-active in free agency this Match.
Below is a mock off-season plan leading up to the Draft.
Projected 2019 salary cap space: $20 million (+/-)
The Redskins cut the following players:
Josh Norman: Cap savings - $8.5 million
Zach Brown: Cap savings - $5.75 million
Vernon Davis: Cap savings - $5 million
Stacy McGee: Cap Savings - $2.2 million
Mason Foster: Cap Savings - $2.05 million
Total Savings: $23.50
The Redskins re-structure the following players:
Jordan Reed: 2019 cap savings - $3 million
New 2019 salary cap space: $45.5 million (- $7.5 million for draft picks and to sign players during the season).
*$38 million to spend in free agency

The Redskins extend the following player:
Brandon Scherff: 5 years, 65 million ($8 million cap hit in 2019)
The Redskins re-sign the following players:
Jamison Crowder: 4 years, 36 million ($7 million cap hit in 2019)
HaHa Clinton-Dix: 4 years, 32 million ($5 million cap hit in 2019)
Arie Kouandjio: 2 years, 5 million ($2 million cap hit in 2019)
Zach Vigil: 1 year, 1 million ($1 million cap hit in 2019)
Total: $15 million for 2019
The Redskins sign the following free agents:
Darqueze Dennard(27) CB: 3 years, 24 million ($6 million cap hit in 2019)
Jesse James(25) TE: 2 years, 8 million ($3 million cap hit in 2019)
Shane Ray(25) EDGE: 2 years, 8 million ($3 million cap hit in 2019)
Tre Boston(27) S: 2 year, 6 million ($3 million cap hit in 2019)
Total: $15 million for 2019
Locking up Brandon Scherff long-term is very important. This is a lot of money to throw towards a right guard, but he’s young, talented and worth the investment.
Cutting Josh Norman was a tough decision for me (although if it doesn’t happen this year, it will happen in 2020). The team however needs the salary cap space, especially with the Alex Smith situation hanging over their heads. The signing of Darqueze Denard, who is a solid press-man corner, won’t put too much pressure on the younger guys to have to contribute right away, and will allow more time for them to develop.
Re-signing Crowder is a big move, and a lot of money, but when healthy, he’s been the most consistent and productive receiver on this team. Losing him would hurt an already pedestrian unit. Plus, if a new quarterback comes in, that player needs an immediate security blanket - Crowder provides just that.
At safety, I feel the team needed to re-sign HaHa Clinton-Dix. Contrary to what some on here think, he actually played well down the stretch after he began to get comfortable with the defense. Adding Tre Boston on the back end gives the Skins two playmakers in the secondary.
At EDGE, I really like Shane Ray, who fell on some hard times in Denver due to injury, then got buried on the depth chart behind Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. He’s a speed rusher who can excel with the big boys up front taking some heat off him on the outside.
