The former NFL receiver is making the rounds, presumably as a candidate to coach the team’s wide receivers or special teams.
One of the positions still left unfilled on the Green Bay Packers’ coaching staff is the wide receiver coach job. Head coach Matt LaFleur has taken his time in putting the final touches on his staff for 2019, but we have news of a new candidate for that position.
The latest individual to interview for a job in Green Bay is a former player who had tremendous success as a wide receiver in the NFL: Wes Welker. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated broke the news, reporting that Welker interviewed last week for a job.
Welker has spent the last two seasons working for the Houston Texans as an offensive and special teams assistant. Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was Welker’s wide receivers coach early in his Patriots tenure before being promoted to quarterbacks coach and eventually to offensive coordinator. A plausible position for Welker in Green Bay would be as the wide receivers coach, though his special teams experience — both as a player and a coach — could make him a candidate for a more substantial post in that area.
In a 12-year NFL playing career, Welker caught 903 passes for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns, doing most of his damage in six years with the New England Patriots. Welker was twice named first-team All-Pro, in 2009 and 2011. The latter was his best season, as he led the NFL with 122 receptions, gained 1,569 yards, and scored nine times. Welker was also an accomplished return man, taking both kickoffs and punts in his first three years in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins before focusing on punt returns as a Patriot. He also won college football’s award for the best special teams player in 2003 when playing at Texas Tech.
Welker retired from the NFL after the 2015 season due to numerous concussions over the course of his playing career.
In addition to the wide receivers coach position remaining open, the Packers still have not hired any special teams coaches for 2019. It would appear to be a big jump for Welker to be under consideration as special teams coordinator, but a job as a primary special teams assistant could be a possibility.
