Case Keenum was shocked when he learned about the Joe Flacco trade

At least one person was shocked the Broncos made a move at the quarterback position.

Former Denver Broncos starting quarterback Case Keenum appeared on the Sports Spectrum podcast recently and discussed his thoughts on the Joe Flacco trade publicly for the first time.

Keenum told the people at Sports Spectrum that he was shocked when he learned of the trade via Broncos General Manager John Elway who called him that morning to let him know what was going down.

“(Broncos GM John) Elway called me that morning and we had a great conversation, which he didn’t have to do, and I appreciated that,” Keenum said this week on the Sports Spectrum Podcast. “I was definitely shocked, it was a surprise for us and I think probably for the first day or so that’s kind of what it was. But for us, we’re definitely disappointed, it’s not something we wanted to happen. I know that everybody’s doing their job and John feels like that was a chance for him to help the Broncos out.”

As we know, the Broncos traded a 4th round draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens for the services of Joe Flacco. This means that Keenum who just signed a two-year, $36 million deal with the Broncos last March will likely be on a new team come the start of the 2019 season. It has already been reported that the Broncos are already shopping Keenum around the league to see if they can get a trade done so it seems like he’ll be moving on one way or another.

Keenum said he is being open-minded right now and that “a lot is up in the air right now; this is really fresh” when asked about his future.

“You know, really, it’s really open-ended right now. We don’t know what’s going to happen, there’s still a lot up in the air; this is really fresh. So a lot of these emotions that we’re talking about are still kind of going on, still happening. So who knows what’s going to be in store? I don’t for sure, God does. But we’ll be ready for whatever God has in store for us next,” Keenum said.

In his first and likely only season as the Broncos starter, Keenum passed for 3,890 yards, totaled just 18 touchdowns, threw for 15 interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 81.2. The 15 interceptions were tied for second most in the NFL with Andrew Luck and rookie Sam Darnold. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger led the NFL with 16 interceptions.

This output wasn’t good enough for General Manager John Elway and with Gary Kubiak leaving the Front Office to join the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff, Keenum lost a big-time supporter. Kubiak’s departure, a new coaching staff, and Keenum’s play all led to them moving on from him and acquiring Joe Flacco.
