Cleveland Browns Free Agent Review: DT Carl Davis

Is Cleveland interested in actually utilizing him in 2019 after keeping him on the bench most of 2018?

Our next undrafted free agent preview looks at DT Carl Davis.

How and When He Joined the Browns: The Browns claimed Davis off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens last year after final cuts were made. Among the players they waived in favor of Davis was DE Carl Nassib, who went on to log 6.5 sacks for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Productivity Level Last Season: Davis played in 5 games, registering one tackle and logging a total of 31 defensive snaps. He played so little that we couldn’t even find a picture of him in a Browns uniform!

Why Keeping Him Could Make Sense: When the Browns first claimed Davis, Pro Football Focus gave him props for being one of the league’s better interior run defenders. Cleveland was thin at the defensive tackle spot all year, but Davis still couldn’t crack the lineup. Was this more of a development issue, where they wanted him to change something with the hopes of him being a gem in 2019?

What the Browns Should Do: Cleveland will be upgrading the defensive tackle spot significantly this offseason. While they caught a bit of lightning in a bottle with castoffs like WR Breshad Perriman and OT Greg Robinson, I don’t think Davis will have the same fate. I would not bother re-signing him.

Let us know below whether or not the team should try to re-sign Carl Davis!
