Player Overview
Dillion Mitchell was a highly recruited 4-star prospect out of Memphis, Tennessee who received offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Georgia just to name a few powerhouses. Mitchell was a pretty good basketball player in high school as well and when he decided to take his talent to Oregon he intended to play both sports. His speed and quickness are obvious on the field. Mitchell committed to the Ducks because he was a fan of the team and the recruiting staff impressed him a great deal on his official visit. For the past three seasons he has played with one of the best quarterbacks in the nation but it wasn’t until this most recent season where Mitchell really broke out and took over games. After showing flashes of how electric he could be in past seasons Mitchell finally put some more consistent evidence on film. His connection with Justin Herbert this year was fun to watch. One area Mitchell has really improved in is his route running. The difference is evident between 2017 and 2018. One area he needs to improve is his concentration to ward off untimely drops. Mitchell was WR2 upside and like a lot of mid round prospects his test numbers will determine a lot about his future in the NFL draft.
Strengths
- Athletic player who has good size, the speed to stretch the field, and the agility and quickness to be a problem on short and intermediate routes.
- Footwork and route running has improved over his career knows how to set his man up and is quick and smooth off his release and can work past his defender to get open.
- Understands coverages and makes a living out of finding the soft spot in zone coverage. Efficient with the ball in his hand and can make people miss with his agility and get yards after the catch.
- Versatile and has a future playing outside, the slot, or both. Flashes good body control and is a willing blocker.
Weaknesses
- Inconsistent catch mechanics loom large. Sometimes he looks like a pro other times it looks like its the first time he’s ever catching a ball. Reverts back to bad habits when contested at times. Leads to drops.
- Needs to be more consistent when using his body as a separator and tracking the ball. Can mistime his jumps. Leads to drops.
- Often times waits for the ball to drop into his lap instead of being more aggressive and attacking it which leads to some DBs being able to break up the pass.

How He Would Fit On The Redskins
For some it would be tough to justify spending a pick on a wide receiver who will need to have his catching mechanics and technique rebuilt at the pro level to be more consistent like Michell does. But Mitchell does also check all the other boxes you look for in wideouts, speed and athleticism, route running, agility, and size. There are few other mid round prospects that will have his athletic and technical upside. While he does need work I think he can help the Redskins now and you can’t teach speed or agility. He will draw the ire of some fans as he works towards getting better with drops but he will also produce some big plays on the outside and in the slot. I think Mitchell has WR2 upside if he gets the coaching he needs and works towards being more consistent. He could be a solution in the meantime for the Redskins in the slot as Jamison Crowder is not expected to be re-signed. He also could be another target downfield as well. Mitchell has gotten better each year of his career and while I think he like all other players will have to adjust to the NFL I also think he could end up being one of the better values at the position when all is said and done.
