Kyler Murray Choosing Football Over Baseball, and the Joe Flacco Trade can Greatly Help the Redskins

When Kyler Murray made comments this week that he’s totally committed to playing football, that news had to be music to Redskins fan’s ears. Not because the Redskins should draft him (I firmly believe they should not), but because some team ahead of us in the draft will; this dropping another (better) quarterback down to pick 15.

When news broke yesterday that the Denver Broncos had traded for Joe Flacco, the Redskins fortunes turned even better! That likely means that Denver, another quarterback-needy team selecting ahead of the Redskins, will be out of the marked for a new signal caller in round one of the draft this year.

Currently, there are four teams drafting ahead of the Redskins in the 2019 NFL Draft that may need a quarterback:

- Giants (pick #6) - Need a successor to Manning

- Jaguars (pick #7) - Need anyone with a pulse

- Bengals (pick #11) - May be looking to move on from Dalton

- Dolphins (pick #13) - Likely to move on from Ryan Tannehill

Of these four teams, it’s very likely that at least one acquires a veteran like Nick Foles via trade. It’s also very likely that Ryan Tannehill goes to another team on this list (Bengals have been linked to him already).

The draft is very heavy at defensive line and EDGE, which also may help push a top quarterback to number 15.

This is a scenario I could see play out:

1 - Cardinals: Nick Bosa EDGE Ohio St.

2 - 49ers: Josh Allen EDGE Kentucky

3 - Jets: Quinnen Williams DT Alabama

4 - Raiders: Ed Oliver DT Houston

5 - Buccaneers: Greedy Williams CB LSU

6 - Giants: Dwayne Haskins QB Ohio St.

7 - Jaguars: (acquire Nick Foles via trade) - Jawaan Taylor OT Florida

8 - Lions: Montez Sweat EDGE Miss St

9 - Bills: Jonah Williams OT Alabama

10 - Broncos: (traded for Joe Flacco) - Cody Ford OT Oklahoma

11 - Bengals: (sign Ryan Tannehill) - Devin White LB LSU

12 - Packers: Jachai Polite EDGE Florida

13 - Dolphins: Kyler Murray QB Oklahoma

14 - Falcons: Christian Wilkins DT Clemson

15 - Redskins: Drew Lock QB Missouri

There is no doubt Alex Smith’s future in the NFL is in serious question. The likelihood he never plays another down in the NFL seems to be increasing by the day. The Redskins are in a pinch because they are on the hook for the guaranteed money in Smith’s contract. Right now, he’s taking up 10.5 percent of the teams salary cap. Colt McCoy will most likely go into 2019 as the starter, and his salary accounts for almost 2 percent of the team’s 2019 cap. There is no way the Redskins could afford a veteran like Ryan Tannehill or Andy Dalton. That would likely press the team’s quarterback cap percentage near 20 percent, and that is not a realistic number for one position.

The only free agent options at quarterback would be guys like Teddy Bridgewater (on a one-year prove-it type deal), or as some have suggested, a journeyman veteran like Ryan Fitzpatrick to compete with McCoy.

I still feel the best bang-for-the-buck, and obviously the smartest plan for the future of this franchise, is to draft your future quarterback either this year, or in 2020, and let that player learn for a bit behind a veteran.

In my opinion, Drew Lock would be the best quarterback for the Redskins if they decide to use their first pick in the 2019 draft on a new signal caller.

The circumstances that have transpired this week just made the option of landing a player like Drew Lock at pick 15 closer to a reality. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that Bruce Allen doesn’t do something stupid like trading up in the draft for Kyler Murray!
