Mike Shanahan thinks the Vikings got the right quarterback

Shanahan’s the one on the left, in case you’re not totally sure

And he’s probably right, you know

Say what you will about Kirk Cousins. . .and, boy howdy, have Minnesota Vikings fans been doing that for almost a year. . .but there’s at least one guy that knows a little bit about this sort of thing that thinks that the Vikings got the right quarterback.

In an interview with Grandpa Sports at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, former Denver Broncos’ head coach Mike Shanahan talked about his former player, Gary Kubiak, becoming an offensive advisor for the Vikings. During the interview, Shanahan expressed his opinion that the Vikings did the right thing by signing Cousins almost a year ago.

“One thing about a quarterback is, you’re a portion of your team,” he said. “Regardless, I mean, I think the world of Cousins, but I think you have to have an offensive line and your defense has to play like they did the year before. When they don’t, usually all the blame goes to the quarterback.”

Does he think Kubiak and Cousins will get along?

“Both guys are very easy to work with, both are extremely bright, have great work ethics and I think both will work together perfectly,” Shanahan said. “You have the right [quarterback] there. Not everybody can see that, but hopefully when they get him a supporting cast, people will see that.”

I don’t think that Shanahan was meaning to impugn the entire supporting cast for the Vikings. Obviously, the Vikings have what might be the best 1-2 receiver duo in the NFL in Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, but there’s a big part of the “supporting cast” that’s a sore spot. Of course, we mean the offensive line, and I think we’re all assuming. . .or, at the very least, hoping. . .that the Vikings will take significant measures to fix that this offseason between free agency and the draft.

People are going to have their opinions on whether or not the Vikings did the right thing by signing Kirk Cousins, but there’s at least one guy with multiple Super Bowl rings on his fingers that think they got it right.
