Saints’ Dennis Allen a candidate for Bengals DC, per report

Perhaps the Bengals don’t have their DC wrapped up just yet.

The Bengals were initially targeting Jack Del Rio as the team’s next defensive coordinator.

However, it appears another former head coach/defensive play-caller is an option for Zac Taylor’s first staff in Cincinnati.

According to NFL reporter Alex Marvez, Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is in consideration for the job:

It’s unclear what this means for Del Rio, but either one of these guys would be a good hire. They both have extensive experience calling defensive plays and have both been head coaches, ironically with the Raiders.

Allen just finished his third full season as defensive coordinator of the Saints (he took over for Rob Ryan in the middle of the 2015 season). His defense ranks second in the league against the run and tied for fifth in sacks, but it ranked 14th in total defense and 29th in passing defense.

As a head coach, Allen coached the Raiders from 2012-14, going 4-12 in each of his first two seasons and 0-4 in the third season before being fired.
