DE Ziggy Ansah believed to be meeting with Saints Friday

No one seems to know anything

Former Detroit Lions pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah, often referred to by his nickname “Ziggy”, met with the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, general manager Brandon Beane confirmed. No one has heard anything since then.

“Yeah, we visited with Ziggy,” said Beane at Thursday afternoon’s press conference. “Great young man. Did all that stuff. He’ll continue on that. Nothing to do, but enjoyed visiting with Ziggy.”

That doesn’t exactly sound like a signing is imminent.

According to Larry Holder of The Athletic, Ansah was scheduled to fly into New Orleans last night to meet with the Saints. He continued that with a tweet on Friday:

“I reported yesterday Ansah was on his way to New Orleans. So that’s happening right now,” tweeted Holder at 9:38 Eastern Friday morning.

The Saints have just under $16 million in cap space after shuffling things around with quarterback Drew Brees. That was before re-signing backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. New Orleans should be able to sign Ansah, but it would leave them cap-strapped going forward.

Buffalo, meanwhile, still has around $40 million in salary cap space available and will be unhindered by a contract for the former Lion.

The Bills are in the market for a pass rusher with Jerry Hughes and Shaq Lawson entering the final year of their respective deals.

Ansah has been oft-injured recently but is highly effective when he is on the field. He had four sacks in seven games in 2018 plus 12 sacks in 14 games in 2017. He missed three games in 2016, two games in 2017, and nine games in 2018 after his Pro Bowl season in 2015 when he played in all 16 games. He played under the franchise tag in 2018 for Detroit.
