Let’s see If it pays off for them.
The Green Bay Packers had to do something.
Back-to-back losing seasons, the second of which had a mostly healthy Aaron Rodgers under center, shook the organization to its core and the Packers decided broad strokes were needed to revitalize the franchise.
The Ted Thompson/Mike McCarthy regime was swept aside for a younger, more modern approach with Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur now leading the football team.
Now, in the first year of the Gutekunst/LaFleur pairing, gone too is Thompson’s conservative/frugal approach to free agency for a more bold and decisive direction. That much is clear after Gutekunst signed four players before the 2019 free agency period even began.
In case people haven’t noticed, change has come to 1265 Lombardi Avenue and what started as a change in current has developed into a full blown tsunami.
Time will tell how these moves ultimately paid off, but short-term the Packers seem to be in much, much better shape than they were just a week ago. Thanks to Gutekunst’s aggressive but smart approach to free agency and the new players’ contracts, the Packers now have an even more increased level of flexibility heading into the draft especially with two first round picks.
Using free agency to free up your draft board is what you’re ideally supposed to do and Gutekunst hit one out of the park so far. The Packers could even add a few more second-tier free agents without boxing themselves into a corner in regards to salary cap space.
On paper at least, the Packers got better. We’ll have to wait until the fall however to see the true results.
There’s more on the Packers’ new direction plus a new mock draft after the initial free agency period in today’s cheese curds.
Packers make aggressive moves despite knowing the risks—PackersNews.com
The Packers really had no choice but to dive deep into free agency given the holes on the roster and while there are still risks to these signings, the Packers have given themselves exit windows in each contract that minimize damage should the players not perform as the team hopes.

All four players Green Bay signed are entering their physical prime and Gutekunst hopes he’ll have them under contract during their peak years.
Any defender would benefit from the front seven the Bears have. It doesn’t change the fact HaHa Clinton-Dix can’t tackle or cover relatively well. That will be exposed at some point, regardless of what the front seven do.
