Kelvin Harmon Can Make Every Catch, But is He What the Redskins Need at WR?

Hogs Haven takes a look at 2019 NFL Draft prospects that could contribute to the Redskins

Kelvin Harmon, WR
School: N.C. State | Conference: ACC
College Experience: Junior | Age: 21
Height / Weight: 6-2 / 221 lbs
Projected Draft Status: 2nd Round
NFL Comparison: Michael Thomas

College Statistics & Athletic Profile

Player Overview

Harmon was an accomplished receiver at the high school and collegiate level, earning top recruiting marks and then going on to start as a true freshman at N.C. State. He was named to first and second-team All-ACC as a junior and sophomore, respectively. As a sophomore, he became the first Wolfpack receiver since 2003 to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season. He’s very confident in his abilities and plays with an aggressive swagger.

Strengths

  • Big and strong-bodied with vice grips for hands
  • Comfortable making difficult contested catches in traffic
  • Aggressive run blocker
  • Good on-the-field body language; fiery and passionate play demeanor
  • Counted on to move the chains on third down

Weaknesses

  • Not a straight-line burner, but oftentimes able to create necessary separation to make the catch
  • Struggles to accelerate past lengthy/speedy corners
  • Too reliant on physicality and size
  • Deep route success could drop in the pros due to increased size/strength/speed of defensive backs

How He’d Fit on the Redskins

I’m a big fan of Kelvin Harmon and think he will be a successful player in the NFL. However he’s not exactly the type of receiver the Redskins need, as someone with more speed is really ideal to help compliment players already on the roster, as well as the scheme and play style the Redskins want to implement.

If he’s still somehow around in the 3rd round and the Redskins haven’t addressed receiver yet, I would say absolutely take him, because it would be a tremendous value. His physical and confident play style, size, hands, and production despite lack of top-end speed all remind me of Michael Thomas; however, it’s tough to predict someone will come into the league and have the immediate success Thomas had.
