Thankfully, it appears that Brown received his tender to return for next year.
A mild surprise arose around Acme Packing Company on Friday morning when perusing the roster listed on the Green Bay Packers’ website. The four new free agent signings are officially listed there — though without jersey numbers for the time being — but farther down the list was a notable name showing up in an unexpected place.
The name is Tony Brown, the young cornerback whom the Packers plucked from the Chargers for the practice squad after training camp cuts came down. Brown did not show up on APC’s free-agent lists all offseason because he was listed by NFL contract sites (such as Over the Cap) as being under contract through 2019. However, Brown’s contract apparently was only for 2018, making him an exclusive-rights free agent this offseason.
Brown clearly received his ERFA tender, however, which will be a one-year contract for the league minimum salary. The other players listed in the ERFA group all received their tenders, while Kentrell Brice — who was eligible for restricted free agency but did not receive a tender — is listed under the unrestricted group.
It is a minor transactional note, as Brown will return for 2019 regardless, but an interesting note nonetheless.
After the Packers promoted Brown from the practice squad in late September, he played in 11 games with three starts. Brown totaled 34 tackles in those games, breaking up five passes and leading the team with two forced fumbles.
