The Packers get their young receiver back for another season in 2019 after agreeing to a new contract.
The Green Bay Packers answered one more question in free agency on Friday, ensuring that they can retain one of their own for the 2019 season. Restricted free agent Geronimo Allison has reportedly signed a one-year contract with the Packers, buying out his restricted free agent season and ensuring that he will stay in Green Bay for the coming year.
The news first came from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports and was later confirmed by Jim Owczarski of Packersnews.com.
Allison had received the low tender as a restricted free agent, which was for a one-year contract at $2.025 million. However, under the terms of the CBA, Allison would have been free to negotiate an offer sheet with another NFL team, with the Packers only retaining the right to match that offer sheet. Had Allison signed the tender instead, he would have ended his free agency but would have had no guaranteed money and would have been waiting until the regular season to collect his paychecks.
By signing a newly-negotiated contract, Allison comes off the market for other teams while ensuring some financial security for the coming year, His new contract reportedly pays him a larger amount of money overall in 2019 than that tender, with some of that money being guaranteed and additional incentives being included as well.
With Allison playing a significant role in the Packers’ offense prior to his injury in 2018, it should come as no surprise that some other NFL teams were interested in signing him to an offer sheet. However, Allison now has an opportunity to cash in as an unrestricted free agent next spring while also getting some security in 2019. He also remains in Green Bay, a place where he is reportedly very happy, rather than jumping to a new team for the coming season.
