Strengths

Clelin Ferrell has the ideal size and length to be a solid defensive end at the next level. His long arms gives him extra ability to reach the offensive tackle first, and win the hands battle. Smart player, understands how to set up blockers for counter moves, is not one-dimensional in that aspect. Solid strength, makes up for a lack of burst speed. High motor, unrelenting on every play which makes him a force in the run game as well.

Weaknesses

As mentioned, lack of burst speed, won’t beat anyone with his quickness. Doesn’t have the ‘bend’ that many look for in edge rushers. Not the greatest open-field tackler, but likely won’t find himself in a ton of those positions.

Verdict

Ferrell is one of the elite edge rusher prospects in this class. His size and strength is his calling card. In combination with his motor, Ferrell is solid both as a run stopper as well as a pass rusher. Has the ability to be a three-down player due to that versatility. Intelligent in his use of pass rushing moves, he understands how to get the most of his long arms and hand usage. Should become a starter right away at the next level. A winner at the collegiate level, Ferrell is a natural leader and competitor and will be a nice addition to any locker room.

Fit With Raiders

Clelin Ferrell is the Yin to Arden Key’s Yang. While Key uses his speed rush to get to the quarterback and is a bit of a liability in run defense, Ferrell is nearly the complete opposite. The two of them together could create quite a dynamic duo, and everyone who knows anything about football understands the Raiders have a huge need at edge rusher.

While drafting Ferrell at 4th overall could be a reach, he could be an option for the Raiders in a trade back scenario as site editor Levi Damien’s mock draft. Likewise for a trade up from the lower part of the first round. Also, some mock drafts have seen Ferrell fall into the 20’s where the Raiders could select him at 24th. It is more likely that Ferrell goes in the top 20, so a trade back from 4th or a trade up from 24th or 27th (both entirely possible) would be the most sensible way for Oakland to grab Ferrell.
