Aaron Rodgers gets a little protection with the Packers’ second foray into the first round.
The Green Bay Packers are the only team in the NFC North that has two first-round picks (the Bears have zero). And after finishing 2018 with yet another postseason absence, they could really use it.
In our Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Packers picked up Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson with the 12th overall pick. Now it’s up to POD commenter SJLionFan609 to round out the Packers’ first round. The pick is in: it’s Oklahoma offensive lineman Cody Ford. Here’s SJLionFan609’s explanation:
“With the 30th pick in the first round, and their second first-round pick, the Packers are going to go with the mauler Cody Ford out of Oklahoma. A 6-foot-4, 330 pounds, Ford is a mountain of a man that has freakish athleticism. He plays with an angry streak and will flatten you if he gets his hands on you, but also takes excellent angles to secure blocks at the second level.
Ford can play either guard or tackle—he played left guard in 2017 and moved to right tackle in 2018 at Oklahoma, and that’s what makes him the pick here... versatility. Ford also had a PFF pass blocking grade over 85 the last two years to go with his run blocking skills.
He will provide depth this year, if he doesn’t win a starting role, and help anywhere he is needed. With Bryan Bulaga’s contract expiring after this season and Jason Spriggs not being the player the Packers had hoped he would turn into, Ford can either sit and learn behind Bulaga or he can compete with left guard Lane Taylor (PFF’s 26th ranked guard) or right guard Billy Turner(PFF’s 33rd ranked guard) for a starting job. The Packers did just throw $28 million at Turner to lure him away from the Broncos, so keeping Ford at tackle to learn the ropes behind Bulaga might be the best bet.
This pick, along with the Hockenson pick at 12, is aimed at turning the Packers run game into a strength. Aaron Rodgers is getting a little long in the tooth, so not having to count on him to throw it 40 times a game will only benefit the Packers. The Packers pick again in 14 picks and there are plenty of players that can still help which, as a Lions fan, I am not too happy about but as Packers GM it ma-ma-ma-makes me happyyy.”
