Raiders add punter AJ Cole following tryout, release wrong punter

Man, Raiders go through a lot of punters. Following a season in which fifth round rookie Johnny Townsend was the worst punter in all of football, the Raiders made former Chargers punter Drew Kaser the only player added on a reserve/future contract who hadn’t been on the team’s practice squad during the season.

It wouldn’t take much for Kaser to outdo Townsend’s performance last season, in fact there was little doubt that had the Raiders actually been playing for something late in the season that they would have looked for a more dependable punter during the season.

So, when former NC State punter AJ Cole announced via his Instagram account that he had signed with the team following a minicamp tryout, it would have made some sense that he would be replacing the disappointing Townsend. Nope. It’s Kaser who is getting the boot

Cole averaged 42.2 yards per punt in his four years at NC State — a yard less than Townsend’s average last season (43.2). A tryout player isn’t really the level of competition you would like to see with the only shot to unseat Townsend, but that’s what they got now.
