Minutes after the Raiders officially announced they had signed 4th round pick tight end Foster Moreau to his rookie contract, they parted ways with veteran tight end Lee Smith.
Smith spent the past four season with the Raiders as their punishing blocking tight end. Late last season they showed some loyalty to him by signing him to his $1.1 million 2019 roster bonus early. Only to cut him just over four months later.
They did the same thing with Jordy Nelson after the additions of Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams back in March.
Mike Mayock has said that the selection of Moreau was for more than his blocking abilities, though blocking will initially be his primary duties. The team also signed free agent Luke Willson last month, and the team clearly sees he and Moreau as the frontrunners for the blocking tight end job, making the 31-year-old Smith the odd man out.
Lee Smith finishes his Raiders career with 36 catches for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns in 51 appearances.
