Chiefs headlines for Friday, June 28.
The latest
Following the NFL’s eight-hour interview with Hill on Wednesday in Kansas City, sources tell Yahoo Sports the Chiefs are hopeful a ruling on the matter will come before the start of training camp, and if that comes to fruition, expect him to be in attendance for the start of camp on July 26 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
What’s next for Tyreek Hill? | NBC Sports Pro Football Talk
The NFL will continue its investigation, as needed, before making a decision on whether Hill should be disciplined. Unless the information provided by Hill requires follow-up work, the NFL should be prepared to reach a conclusion, given that (as the league explained the protocol in defending the delayed interview of former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt) the NFL waits to interview the player until the rest of the investigation has concluded.
Every NFL team’s X-factor entering the 2019 season | Pro Football Focus
Cast in a likely feature role in 2019, Damien Williams will look to bring more of what he flashed a season ago, as he averaged 4.9 yards per carry and 2.62 yards after contact per attempt. He made his presence felt in the receiving game as well, hauling in 86.8% of the passes thrown his way and averaging 1.49 yards per route run, the 14th-highest figure in the league. More touches will only mean good things for him and the Chiefs’ offense.
To the special needs students in Elbert County, Georgia, though, Mecole Hardman is just their friend.
Through his work with Friends Helping Friends, a local organization that partners students with their special needs counterparts, Hardman has formed a lifelong bond with a group of people who don’t care that he became the Chiefs’ first draft pick a couple months ago. Or that he can fly, with a 4.33-second time in the 40-yard dash. Or that he’ll be sharing a field with the NFL MVP this fall.
100 facts for the 2019 fantasy football season | ESPN
3. Mahomes to all other Chiefs scored 2.052 points per target.
8. In 2012, the Chiefs’ final season before Reid, they ranked dead-last in QB points with 122.58.
9. From 2013-17 (the pre-Mahomes era), Reid’s Chiefs averaged 264.96 QB points per season.
46. Since Andy Reid took over as head coach in Kansas City in 2013, Chiefs RBs have ranked top-four in the NFL in: yards per carry, rushing touchdowns, yards before first contact per rush, red zone rushing touchdowns, yards per catch, red zone targets, receiving touchdowns and fantasy points.
Mark Fields, CB, Kansas City Chiefs
Fields is a no-hesitation, high-risk, high-reward cornerback. He bites on double moves but also has the fast mental processing, twitchiness and ball skills to get his hands on the football on short-to-intermediate routes. Fields had five pass breakups in just seven games as a senior.
The Simms No. 2 quarterback: Patrick Mahomes | NBC Sports Pro Football Talk
The Chris Simms quarterback countdown ended with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at No. 1. He barely edged out Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who landed in No. 2.
Many will disagree. (I definitely do.) Simms admitted that it was close call. By next year, maybe it won’t be. Much depends on whether Mahomes can do in 2019 what he did in 2018.
How Bobby Wagner’s Contract Dispute Reflects the Shifting Value of Inside Linebackers | The Ringer
The Seahawks’ own team-building decisions also point to a counterintuitive view of positional value. Rather than retain 26-year-old edge rusher Frank Clark, Seattle dealt him to the Chiefs for Kansas City’s 2019 first-round pick, its 2020 second-round pick, and a third-round pick swap in 2019. Upon trading for Clark, the Chiefs gave him a massive five-year, $104 million deal with $62.3 million guaranteed. Seattle decided to prioritize Wagner over retaining Clark, which seems to indicate that he has more value to the team. In determining the numbers in his new deal, Wagner’s baseline shouldn’t just be Mosley’s contract. It should be the new deals signed by Clark and Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence this offseason ($21 million AAV with $65 million guaranteed).
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be joining Simone Biles, Drew Carey, Jim Thome and J.R. Smith on Team Cleveland for the game, which will be held July 7, two days before the All-Star Game.
Kelce, who had surgery in March on his ankle, told The Star’s Brooke Pryor he’ll be a “full go” by the start of training camp, so it remains to be seen how much Kelce will play in the softball game.

Julian Edelman unsure about Josh Gordon’s future | NFL
“It’s a life situation and you’re pulling for him ... to get better,” Edelman said Wednesday, via Barstool Sports. “And selfishly, I want him because he’s a really good football player and he can help us.
Gruden struggled in his return to Oakland but the team loaded the roster with playmakers this offseason.
It’s only Year Two for Patricia, but it seems like a fork in the road already. He had a full offseason to weed out the players and assistants who didn’t like his approach. He’s implementing the style of physical football he wants, in a pass-happy NFL world. Either we’ll look back and celebrate Patricia’s old-school, admittedly harsh style as a successful throwback in a world gone soft, or he’ll be derided as yet another Bill Belichick assistant who thought a franchise should abide by whatever he did because he had some rings from New England.
Bills’ Shaq Lawson to Pay for 11-Year-Old Shooting Victim’s Funeral | Sports Illustrated
News outlets report a family member announced Lawson’s contribution Wednesday evening at a vigil for Ja’Naiya Scott. Someone fired shots at the house in Anderson on Sunday morning. Ja’Naiya’s 18-year-old sister and her 11-year-old cousin were also wounded.
“We used to joke his rookie camp that he was going to be in the Hall of Fame, but I kind of wasn’t joking,” Long said.
Ryan Shazier still holds hope for return: ‘I still want to make the Hall of Fame’ | Yahoo! Sports
“I still want to make the Hall of Fame, still want to be the best linebacker in the NFL,” Shazier told the Sun-Sentinel. “I’m not giving up on my goals, and the doctors said don’t give up on my goals, so there’s no problem with me doing that.”
The NFL would be better off without kickers | SB Nation
Realistically, this would never happen. Kickers have been around since the start of football, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. This isn’t a call for all kickers to lose their jobs, either. It’s merely an opportunity to think about what a kicker-less game of football would look like and the benefits that would come from that.
