Julian Edelman opens up about the motivation behind his new documentary

The Super Bowl MVP is making the media rounds to speak about the project.

Julian Edelman’s journey to NFL stardom is quite unique. Entering the league as a seventh-round draft pick by the New England Patriots, the undersized college quarterback served in a rotational role before breaking out in his fifth year and going on to become Tom Brady’s go-to wide receiver and a three-time Super Bowl champion. The 2018 season encapsulates Edelman’s career in perfect fashion — it was a year of challenge, perseverance and success.

Now, his story will be the subject of a new documentary: 100%: Julian Edelman will focus on his way back from an ACL tear that cost him all of 2017, through a four-game suspension, to being named the most valuable player of Super Bowl 53. The documentary will premiere this Friday, June 28, at 9:00 p.m. ET. on Showtime; in order to promote it, Edelman is currently making the rounds through the media.

First, he appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America to talk about the motivation behind the project and his relationship with his father:

“I think it was because when you get hurt, if you’ve hurt as an athlete, you’re in a lonely spot. You’re kind of isolated, and this gave me an opportunity to work on something else, my creative side,” Edelman told host and NFL Hall of Fame defensive lineman Michael Strahan. “I’ve been approached by numerous people that do a documentary, but what better way to do it than go out and make my own and to do it the way I want to do it.”

Edelman did a more extensive interview on CBS on Tuesday night when visiting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert:

Edelman spoke about a wide variety of topics, from first meeting Patriots quarterback Tom Brady during his 2009 rookie season (and being frightened in that moment), to his motivational skills, to his faith and Jewish heritage. While 100%: Julian Edelman is not specifically mentioned, the interview still gives some insight into the 33-year-old’s mindset — one that will be on full display when the documentary, for which is currently on the promotional path, airs on Friday.
