Mike Garafolo tweeted that Jones is expected to join rookies at practice on Tuesday.
As the sixth overall pick in the 2019 draft, Jones was slotted to receive a four-year contract worth $25,664,056, including a $16.7 million signing bonus, and Jones’ cap number for the 2019 season will be $4,666,192 which rises to roughly 8.2 million by the fourth year of his contract.
As a first-round pick, the Jones’ contract (as well as those of Dexter Lawrence and DeAndre Baker) has a fifth-year team option. As a top-10 pick, Jones’ fifth-year option will be equal to the average top-10 salaries for quarterbacks in his fourth season (2022).
Thanks to the rookie wage scale included in the 2011 CBA, we have long known what the financial structure of Jones’ contract will look like. The money and length of all the contracts were already decided upon before the players were drafted. Thanks to the rookie wage scale, rookie contracts (particularly those of highly-drafted quarterbacks) are much smaller than they were a decade ago, and are generally agreed upon quickly. Any delays in signing the contracts tend to come from disagreements over the language in the contract, usually offsetting terms.
Offsetting terms allow teams to reduce the amount of guaranteed money they pay a player should he be cut and signed by another team before his rookie contract is up. Contracts without offsetting terms allow players to get the full value of both their rookie contract and the second contract they sign.
