Giants’ news 7/13: Golden Tate on Manning and Jones, Eli’s HOF chances, and more

News and notes from the Giants and around the NFL

Good morning New York Giants fans!

Murder charge filed in Dwane Simmons killing

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- An 18-year-old Topeka man faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in the killing of Washburn football player Dwane Simmons and the shooting of his former teammate Corey Ballentine earlier this year.

Golden Tate believes the Giants have a “good problem” at quarterback.

In an appearance on NFL Total Access, new Giants’ receiver Golden Tate stated that he believes the Giants are in a good place regarding their quarterback position.

“What I can I see, Eli Manning’s got a lot of juice left,” Tate told NFL Network’s Scott Hanson on Total Access on Thursday. “He’s still got some zip on his passes.

”I’ve been impressed. I think we have a really good problem. We’ve got a Hall of Fame-type of quarterback in my mind and we also drafted a guy, a young guy, so we don’t need Daniel to come in and save the day. We just need Daniel to stay on pace, learn as much as he possibly can in a great environment and just take it day by day. We don’t need him to come in tomorrow and win a game. We just need him to stay on pace. I think that’s good news in my mind.”

Sporting News: Eli Manning has a 40 percent chance to go to the Hall of Fame

Sporting News ranked the hall of fame chances for the top players for each team. By their reckoning, the Giants have two future HOFers on the roster. They also list three (technically five) former Giants who are potential Hall Of Fame candidates playing elsewhere around the league in Odell Beckham, Linval Joseph, and Landon Collins (as well as Philip Rivers and Cameron Wake).

Around The NFL

NFL Suspends Its Full Time Official Program

The NFL’s Senior VP of Officiating, Al Riveron, announced Friday that the NFL would be suspending its full time officiating program.

“Unfortunately right now for this year that program will not be used,” Riveron said. “However, like I said, we use our officials during the year, we take them out to the clubs, we take them out to meetings still, that program in a way will continue, not just by the name that we call it now.”

LB Rolando McClain Wants To Make An NFL Comeback

The 29-year old linebacker was the apple of many a Giants’ fans’ eye in the lead-up to the 2010 NFL Draft. Their hopes were dashed when he was selected eighth overall by the Oakland Raiders. McClain’s time in the NFL was marred by suspensions for a variety of issues — as well as a “retirement” at the age of 23 while he was a member of the Baltimore Ravens — and he is currently suspended indefinitely.

But despite all that, McClain wants back in the League, so maybe some Giants fans will finally get their wish.

“I’m nowhere near satisfied with how my professional career has gone,” McClain said. “That’s for myself. That’s me looking in the mirror and talking to my boys. Nah, that’s not the taste I want to leave in my mouth.”
