I’m not personally a big fan of this proposed schedule change.
It was reported on Friday that the NFL owners proposed to the NFLPA an 18-game schedule, but with a catch. The catch is that there is a 16 game limit for every player. Obviously meaning that you would at least need to bench every player on your 53-man roster for at least two games.
That’s a bit wild.
The idea has been percolating for years; finally, the NFL has proposed to the NFLPA the idea of an 18-game season with a 16-games-per-player limit https://t.co/uuACShJr47

The obvious motivation for such a move is revenue. Every NFL game is a bit of a gold mine and two more games would only make the owners even more money. However, it appears that the players are going to be against any rule that makes them sit out two regular season games.
Here are the hurdles I see in this rather out of the box proposal.
Roster expansion?
If every player would have to sit out at least two games, you would need to expand the roster size a good deal.
Look, each team lists seven players per game as inactive so you would have to get very creative to make it work with a 53-man roster. You would have to up it to at least a 63-man roster to even make it work. Hell, you would likely have to add more considering you would need to use three of those spots on an extra kicker, punter, and long snapper.
It just doesn’t make much sense on paper.
Sitting your star quarterbacks
This proposed rule would obviously mean that your star quarterbacks would have to sit out two games. So your Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Phillip Rivers and so on would all have sit out two games and have their backups start those games.
Barring an injury, you would have to pick two games on your schedule where you think you can win without your backup quarterback(and likely other starters). Removing your star players who are already overprotected now is a bit of an odd strategy for the NFL.
Who is going to pay to watch a backup quarterback and others play in a meaningful NFL game? This works in the Broncos favor because of Drew Lock, but obviously not every team is as fortunate. Hell, you would have Blake Bortles leading the high-powered Rams offense.
Watering down your product
Preseason play is a great example of how watered down the sport can get once you remove the roster worthy players.
Second teams offensive line play is often atrocious league-wide. Is there 32 backup worthy quarterbacks in the league and can you find 32 more long snappers, kickers, and punters? If you can, they’re likely not very good and you will be paying full price to watch them play.
Relying on these players to win you games when every NFL game means so much just seems like a shit deal.
Final thoughts
I think a 16-game schedule is fine the way it is. I get the NFL and their owners want even more money(despite them already swimming in pools of money) but an 18 game schedule with these parameters seems like something that would blow up in the NFL’s face.
What do you think MHR? Are you in favor of an 18-game schedule with a 16 game limit for all players? Or do you just want them to just keep it the way it is?
