Related: Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia sounds optimistic about Isaiah Wynn
The New England Patriots will open their 2019 training camp later this month — players report as early as July 21 while the first practice takes place on July 25 — and one of the biggest storylines to watch will be the status of Isaiah Wynn. The second-year man is the front runner to earn the Patriots’ vacant starting left tackle spot, but is of course coming off a season spent rehabbing from an Achilles injury suffered during 2018’s preseason.
Wynn was present during New England’s mandatory minicamp in early March but has yet to participate in team drills. If a recent report by The Athletic’s Jeff Howe is to be believed, however, the 23-year-old should be able to join his teammates as a full participant once training camp gets kicked off: Wynn is expected to be physically ready for camp and has reportedly been running at full speed this offseason.
This would certainly be good news for a Patriots team that saw last year’s starting left tackle, Trent Brown, join the Oakland Raiders via free agency. With Brown gone, veteran offseason addition Jared Veldheer retiring just eight days after getting signed, and third-round rookie Yodny Cajuste himself rehabbing, depth at the position is less than ideal. As a result, guard Joe Thuney lined up at left tackle during offseason workouts.
Wynn would change the whole complexity of the position and give New England a high-upside option to protect Tom Brady’s blindside and create an upfield push in the running game. After all, he was a highly touted prospect entering the 2018 draft and ultimately became the twenty-first overall player to hear his name called. The expectation then was that Wynn would one day take over the Patriots’ left tackle spot. That day is getting closer.
