Chiefs sign TE Manasseh Garner, waive RB Josh Caldwell

NFL: Washington Redskins at Tampa Bay Buccaneers Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

The Chiefs cut hometown running back in favor of a former 2015 undrafted free agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Monday evening that they signed free agent tight end Manasseh Garner and waived running back Josh Caldwell.

Garner was originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Chiefs back in 2015 used mostly as a fullback. In May of that year, Kansas City cut Garner, and since then, he has had stints with the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins, but no NFL games under his belt.

Meanwhile, Caldwell is fresh off of a preseason game in which he ripped off a run of 47 yards followed by a 4-yard run for a touchdown. He was an undrafted free agent signed by the Chiefs during the offseason and is a Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri product.

The signing of Garner could indicate that H-back John Lovett’s shoulder injury, which he suffered on Saturday night, may take some time to heal. General manager Brett Veach and the Chiefs staff could also be simply taking a chance on a familiar player.

As far as Caldwell, the Chiefs are deep at running back, especially considering sixth-round draft pick Darwin Thompson’s performance against the Cincinnati Bengals. Caldwell was probably unlikely to make the roster anyway, so waving him to add depth at tight end makes some sense.
