The Cowboys suffered their first major injury of training camp on Tuesday.
After a day off on Monday, the Dallas Cowboys returned to the field for a late-afternoon practice on Tuesday. The team is now just four days away from their first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, and will treat this week almost like a regular-season game week.
Dallas started today with a morning walk-through, then concluded with a two-hour fully padded afternoon practice finished off with a conditioning period of sprints.
Earlier on Tuesday, Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett talked about his assessment of training camp so far and was not pleased with the team’s results to this point.
“We’re way far off as a team. We’re not even close.” But later added: “I don’t think it’s unique only six real practices into training camp. I think that’s where teams are.”
Who got the day off?
The absences from Tuesday’s practice included Amari Cooper (heel), Zack Martin (back), Sean Lee (knee), and Travis Frederick getting what seemed to be a veteran day off.
No practice today for Amari Cooper (heel), Sean Lee (knee), Zack Martin (back). Travis Frederick looks like he’s getting a veteran day off

Robert Quinn suffers a broken hand
Coming into the 2019 season, expectations were high for defensive end Robert Quinn. Dallas brought in Quinn to replace the production of the absent Randy Gregory, but the Cowboys are going to have to wait a little longer to see those results on the field. After leaving practice early on Tuesday after a on- on-one pas rush drill, it was announced Quinn suffered a fractured hand. Quinn has been having many one-on-one battles with Tyron Smith throughout the start of camp, and it is unfortunate we likely will not be able to see that match up for a while.
Stephen Jones tells us Robert Quinn has a fractured hand and will have surgery in Dallas. Hopeful for return vs Giants @1053thefan @fishsports

7-on-7: Offense builds on their success from Sunday
Through the first eight practices of training camp, the Cowboys defense has looked better than their offense overall, especially in 7-on-7 drills. These drills have been the most challenging part for the offense so far this camp, but they bounced back nicely today in large part due to Dak Prescott. The Dallas quarterback had possibly his best 7-on-7 day of camp so far, connecting on many passes, including an excellent touchdown pass to Randall Cobb. We also got to see some versatility in the offense. Dallas ran one play with two running backs on the field at the same time, and rookie running back Tony Pollard showed his ability to be versatile by motioning out to the wide receiver spot.
We just watched the best 7on7 of camp & maybe Dak’s best performance so far.

He attacked the seam beautifully with great throws to Cobb and Witten. Tony Pollard motioned out to WR. Jaylon Smith made a great play in coverage.

Brett Maher continues to struggle
It is still hard to believe that at this time last year almost no one thought Brett Maher even had a shot at making the Dallas Cowboys team. Despite seven-year veteran Dan Bailey only being able to kick in 12 games and going 15 of 20 in 2017, he was figured as a virtual lock to make the roster. As we all know now, last training camp there was a true kicking competition going on, and Maher won the job.
Maher went 29 of 36 in his rookie year, including two game-winners, and overall was fairly solid. Despite a decent year, the 29-year-old did start to tail off at the end of the season, missing a kick in four of the Cowboys last six games. This year Dallas has another kicker in camp battling with Maher, Kasey Redfern. The Cowboys are Redfern’s sixth team in his NFL career, and he is a guy who is primarily a punter, but also can kick.
Redfern had a very shaky day last Friday going three for six on field goal attempts, missing one from just 33 yards out. Maher has been very shaky all camp, and Tuesday was more of the same. The second-year man out of Nebraska went a solid five for six during the field goal period, but his miss was another short one missing from just 33 yards. Maher got another chance after a nice pass from Dak Prescott to Jason Witten during two-minute drill, but missed from 42 yards out. It is clear the kicking spot is a clear corner at this point of Cowboys’ camp.

Who stood out?
There were several standouts from Tuesday’s practice, mostly on the offensive side of the ball. The first is Dak Prescott, who was outstanding in 7-on-7 and in the two-minute drill. Second is corner back Donovan Olumba, who continued to build on a strong camp by picking off backup quarterback Cooper Rush in team drills. Third is Michael Gallup, who hooked up with Prescott a few times for some nice receptions.
