How did the “Boys look in Monday’s practice?
On the same day rumors surfaced that Dak Prescott was looking for $40 million per year, Prescott and the Cowboys offense had one of their best practices of training camp. Coming off a 17-9 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys are looking to show a little more offensively over the next few preseason games. Kellen Moore’s offense seemed to take it up a notch in Monday’s practice.
It starts with Dak Prescott, and Dak Prescott had a nice day in practice, showing accuracy, ball placement, touch, and drive on some of the deeper throws. Dak completed a couple of very nice passes to the running backs on wheel routes in 1-on-1’s, team period, and 7-on-7’s, and also had multiple quality throws to Michael Gallup, Randall Cobb, and Tavon Austin. One thing we’ve continued to see from the offense is more use of the middle of the field, something they shied away from in 2018. If the Dallas offense can use the middle of the field with their tight ends, wide receivers working inside route’s, and running backs doing something other than catching the football in the flat, that will open up more space on the outside for more deep shots.

Another area the offense showed some improvement in was the red zone. Coming off a disaster year in 2018, the Cowboys struggled to punch the ball into the end zone in Saturday’s preseason game, and it’s something that hasn’t been easy for the them in training camp so far. In Monday’s practice, the offense was much more effective scoring in the red zone against the first-team defense. Dak found both Jamize Olawale and Michael Gallup in the end zone for scores in red zone period. Kellen Moore is going to have some interesting plans for fullback Jamize Olawale, and getting him more involved when the Cowboys are in the red zone may be one of his ways to incorporate the veteran fullback.

Cooper Rush was hot after a decent showing in the team’s first preseason game. Rush has made it clear who the QB2 of the Dallas Cowboys is with his showing in training camp, and against the 49ers. Mike White currently must improve his game both in practice and in games if he wants the Cowboys to go deep at quarterback again with as deep as this team is at other positions of need. It also looks as if the Cowboys QB4, Tayrn Christion, has now made a position switch to wide receiver based off some of the video coming out of practice.

Last but not least, Brett Maher had a perfect day of practice going 6-for-6 from 33, 35, 41, 44, 46 and 48. Maher is walking on thin ice after a rough start to training camp and preseason games. A great day of practice will be good for Maher’s confidence going forward, and could potentially help his case to be the Cowboys starting kicker when the team takes on the New York Giants in week one.
