DQ is not handing out second chances in 2019.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Friday evening that they’ve released defensive back Hamp Cheevers and have signed linebacker Chase Middleton.

As you may recall, the team made plenty of moves last week following the loss in the Hall of Fame game. Hamp Cheevers was signed on Aug. 2, and following last night’s loss, his short stint with the Falcons has come to an end.

Cheevers was on the field for 11% of the Falcons defensive plays against the Miami Dolphins, but was let go following a potential game-winning interception drop. This is reminiscent of Rashard Causey, who the team released following a questionable defensive pass interference which ultimately allowed the Denver Broncos to win the Hall of Fame game.

The corresponding move was the team adding former Georgia State linebacker Chase Middleton. In four seasons with the Panthers, Middleton recorded 191 tackles, six pass deflections, and an interception. After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, he signed with the Houston Texans, who eventually waived him.

The main takeaway from this is that Dan Quinn and company aren’t playing around, especially in the secondary. The young guys are getting no second chances to display what they can bring to this team.
