Jets Sign LB Albert McClellan

NFL: Pro Hall of Fame Game-Chicago Bears at Baltimore Ravens Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

In the wake of Avery Williamson’s season ending knee injury, the New York Jets have signed free agent linebacker Albert McClellan.

Albert McClellan is a 33 year old, 6’ 2”, 235 pound linebacker out of Marshall University. McClellan was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010. McClellan spent the first year of his NFL career on the Ravens’ practice squad before making the 53 man roster in 2011. He became a starting linebacker for the Ravens in 2012, but lost his starting position by 2013. McClellan has been primarily a backup linebacker and special teams player in the NFL, spending substantial time as a starter only in 2012 and 2016.

McClellan tore his anterior cruciate ligament and missed the entire 2017 season before coming back briefly with the Ravens in 2018. The Ravens cut McClellan midway through the 2018 season and the New England Patriots signed him. McClellan played the last 7 games of his 2018 season with the New England Patriots as a special teams specialist.

Albert McClellan has been known as a top special teams player throughout his NFL career, earning PFF first team All Pro honors for his special teams work in 2014 and 2018. At 33 year years old after spending most of his long NFL career as a backup and special teams ace, McClellan is unlikely to replace Avery Williamson as a starter at inside linebacker. However, he may provide decent insurance as a backup and he should upgrade the special teams units if he makes the team.
