The Panthers looked sloppy in a 27-14 loss in their preseason home opener.
The best thing that we can say about this game is that it does not count. To put it briefly, the Panthers played like poop tonight and the Bills didn’t. That’s why the Bills are leaving Charlotte with a 27-14 win. On the bright side, this is a preseason game and the results of said game don’t mean anything. It was essentially a glorified practice with another team, and for that we can be thankful because to be honest the Panthers looked really bad in all phases of the game.
It didn’t matter which quarterback was under center. The offensive line couldn’t protect him long enough for him to connect with receivers, and on the few occurrences when they did the quarterback either made a bad throw or the receiver couldn’t come down with the catch. The running backs had some spots of brilliance running the ball, but most of their quality runs were taken away by holding penalties on the offensive line. Taylor Heinicke led the team down the field in the fourth quarter and connected with Rashad Ross for a touchdown, but unfortunately it was too little too late for Carolina to make a comeback.
The defense couldn’t tackle and made Josh Allen and Matt Barkley look like Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. They couldn’t generate much pressure and when they did, their quality plays were usually negated by illegal hands to the face penalties. Lorenzo Doss made the best play of the night on defense, but that was because Tyree Jackson threw a hail mary right into his arms in the endzone.
Special teams couldn’t get out of their own way. Michael Palardy punted approximately 37 times and the coverage unit decided that the punt returners needed the exercise and let them run free up and down the field all night. Joey Slye made two field goals, including a 54-yarder, which is more of the same from last week.
The best example of how this game went was one play late in the second half when Tyree Jackson fumbled a snap, and the ball bounced straight into the arms of the running back who then ran for a nine yard gain. Everything went right for the Bills and went wrong for the Panthers, and if there’s one small ray of sunshine from this awful night it’s this — it’s just a preseason game and in a few days no one will care that much about the result.
Next week the Panthers play the Patriots in the one preseason game that ‘counts’, so hopefully we see a better showing than what we saw tonight. If not, then we can begin to worry, even if it’s just a tiny bit.

Build Sean McDermott a statue for kneeling this one out. Bills win 27-14.
Cam Newton’s hat has been shown approximately 756 times tonight.
SPOILER: It did not go well.
The Panthers have a third and long inside their own 10 yard line. Let’s see how this goes.
A good idea for a new rule would be a required running clock in the fourth quarter when one team has a two score lead in the preseason.
The Panthers go for two and after the first play is incomplete but there’s a pass interference flag, and Bonnafon punches it into the endzone on the second try. The Panthers trail 27-14.
TOUCHDOWN PANTHERS! Heinicke connects with Rashad Ross for a touchdown to make this a little more respectable.
Taylor Heinicke has been the best Panthers quarterback tonight.
Temmarick Hemingway with a nice catch over the middle on a beautifully thrown ball by Heinicke for a first down.
The Panthers defense stands tall and forces the field goal attempt. It is good and the Bills now lead 27-6.
Lorenzo Doss is shaken up but he’s able to walk off the field. Hopefully he’s okay.
The Panthers defense turns a 10-yard pass into 1st and goal from the 2 yard line. Good job, fellas.
Tyree Jackson is still playing better than Will Grier, if you’re still keeping score.
If you were wondering how this game is going, the Bills just fumbled the snap and turned it into a nine yard gain.
It’s now 4th and 4 after an incomplete pass.
We’ve reached the end of the third quarter and it’s still 24-6 Bills.
Greg Little got away with holding there and Heinicke picks up four yards.
Taylor Heinicke with the first good throw by a Panthers quarterback tonight. A 16-yard dime to Andre Levrone.
Tyree Jackson with a beautifully thrown ball into the endzone and right into the hands of... Lorenzo Doss! Panthers ball on the 20.
And of course it’s taken away on an illegal hands to the face penalty by Ross Cockrell.
Christian Miller with a sack, and and elite sack dance (fisherman reeling in a big catch).
Tyree Jackson has outplayed Will Grier tonight. Interesting.
Jaydon Mickens just dropped the easiest pass he’ll ever have a chance to catch. On the bright side, a holding penalty would have taken it away. Punt team is back on the field.
The entire Bills defensive line just sacked Will Grier. It’s been that kind of night.
Jordan Scarlett has looked good tonight.
Hey, the Panthers forced a punt!
The amount of flags in the second half is concerning.
Matt Barkley, aka Brett Favre 2.0, is shredding the Panthers defense right now.
And Rashaan Gaulden gives them an automatic first down with an illegal hands to the face penalty.
The Panthers get some help with an OPI call to set the Bills back 10 yards.
Michael Palardy has gotten a good workout tonight. That’s not a good sign for the punter.
Grier almost throws an interception and Little commits a chop block. The 2nd half is off to a great start.
Will Grier will start the 2nd half for the Panthers.
The Panthers get within Joey Slye range and he nails the 54-yard field goal as time expires on the first half. At halftime the Panthers trail the Bills 24-6.
So not only does Ron call a timeout with 0:05 left, he argues with the officials to get the time set back to 0:08. Great.
Does Greg Little get credit for half of a sack there? Jeez.
The Panthers had 17 men on the field and still couldn’t stop the Bills third string from scoring a touchdown. Throw this film away, Ron.
Franchise Quarterback Matt Barkley is cooking the Panthers right now.
And the Bills come right back and pick up 40 yards on first down.
HEY WE GOT POINTS! JOEY SLYE WITH THE 40-YARDER! Bills lead 17-3.
Aldrick Robinson is lucky that defender tried for a pick six. He would have been concussed otherwise.
We’re at the two-minute warning and the Panthers are still losing 17-0.
Jordan Scarlett finally gets some positive yards that aren’t taken away by a holding penalty.
Joey Slye misses a 58-yard field goal, but the Bills committed an unsportsmanlike penalty by pushing off when trying to block the kick, so the Panthers get a first down.
Dennis Daley gets in on the holding penalty action. Ruined a great draw play by Bonnafon that picked up a first down.
We’ll take it, but that shouldn’t have been roughing the passer on Shaq Lawson.
Will Grier has to be a double agent sent here to sabotage this team. It’s the only thing that makes any sense.
Elijah Holyfield gets some tough yards and a first down. He’s had a pretty decent preseason so far.
Chris Hogan makes an appearance and picks up eight yards on a swing pass.
Grier throws a beautiful pass right into the numbers... of the defender. It’s a pick six. The Bills now lead 17-0. Yikes.
The Panthers’ offensive line is doing everything they can to keep Scarlett from succeeding tonight. Another nice run, but another holding penalty. This time it’s on Greg Little.
HEY WE HAVE A TURNOVER! THE PANTHERS DID SOMETHING Y’ALL!
On 3rd and 19, Kyle Allen avoids death and throws a completion for two yards. There’s a holding penalty on Taylor Moton but it’s declined and the Panthers will punt (again).
The Panthers have 54 total yards in the second quarter.
Kyle Allen steps up in the pocket like a real quarterback and then throws the ball to Concord Mills.
Jordan Scarlett with a nice run but it’s called back for holding. Bad Trai. Bad.
The Bills try a long field goal and it’s wide right. That’s never happened before in Buffalo.
Or maybe that’s Josh Allen in a Matt Barkley jersey. Yeesh that throw was bad.
Jermaine Carter with a nice tackle there. Probably the best tackle we’ve seen by a Panther tonight.
The Panthers are now getting cooked by Matt Barkley. Yay.
First team defense is still on the field. Interesting strategy there from Ron.
The Panthers went for it on 4th and 2 and Taylor Moton got beat like a drum as Kyle Allen gets sacked. Turnover on downs.
Solid coverage by the Bills defensive back to keep Torrey Smith from making a nice grab inside the five yard line.
CURTIS SAMUEL BABY! Big first down.
And that’s all for the first quarter. The Panthers still trail 10-0, but hey we’re having fun right?
ALL ABOARD THE RIVERBOAT - Kyle Allen scrambles and manages to pick up the first down. This is officially a drive now.
The Panthers tried a wheel route with Curtis Samuel and it did not work at all. It was a bad throw and there was some pass interference involved. Bleh.
D.J. Moore in on the action with a nice grab. We got a first down y’all!
Cameron Artis-Payne sighting. Nice seven yard run there.
And now the Bills have scored a touchdown. The wheels are starting to come off the cart. The XP is good. 10-0 Bills.
So is that Sweeney dude. The tight end we traded for Kevon Seymour.
Cole Beasley is taking over this game y’all.
And then the Bills get a nice punt return. This isn’t going well. Good thing this game doesn’t count.
Aaaand it’s fourth down. That didn’t go so well.
Kyle Allen will start at quarterback for the Panthers. Let’s see how he does.
Looks like they’re gonna kick a field goal and take a 3-0 lead.
The defense tightened up in the red zone and the Bills now face a fourth down. Let’s see what they do here.
Legit did not know that Cole Beasley was with the Bills, but he just picked up a first down.
The guy the Bills took with the seventh round pick that gave Carolina Kevon Seymour just picked up a first down. Nice.
The first team defense is getting worked by the Josh Allen Experience right now. Not a good look.
Pregame
The Carolina Panthers will host the Buffalo Bills (aka Panthers North) tonight for their first home game of 2019, and even though it’s a preseason game that doesn’t count there are still plenty of reasons to watch. For one, Ron Rivera has said that we should see more of the starters than we did last week against the Chicago Bears (which is a given since we didn’t see the starters at all against the Bears, but that’s neither here nor there Ron).
For two (and not that you need any other reasons, but here it is anyway), it’s Panthers football, y’all! Of course we’re gonna watch, right?
Well, if you’re planning to watch, stream or listen to the game, you’re probably wondering how to do that — so here’s where I come in and tell you exactly how you can do just that.
