Despite Andy Reid saying QB1 would get a half of playing time, Mahomes checked out during the first quarter.
We got our second 2019 viewing of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as he gets ready to follow up to his MVP season, and it was a little more playing time against the Pittsburgh Steelers (barely).
In a largely uneventful performance for the Chiefs quarterback, the highlights included an improved slide on a first-down run and a quick throwaway on what looked like a busted play. I’m fine with him protecting himself there. Frankly, I’d be OK with putting him on ice until September.
We were going to write about we saw this week from Mahomes, but it was so minimal. Instead, here are some highlights from Chiefs-Steelers in Week 2 last season. Pretend it was tonight.
#SomethingSmart Mahomes IDs Cover 2, and holds the safety to create a little more room for Kelce with hard eyes to his left. As @ChiefinCarolina mentioned, the shift led to what looks like a coverage bust. I think Pat might have picked up on it. pic.twitter.com/v3Uf6gljiF

After using motion once to create an open window for Kelce, Chiefs come back to it. Pre-motion Pitt is in position to match everyone in man as the Chiefs motion 3 players the Pitt defense gets confused. End up with 3 guys in man w/ a box zone open in MOF & no one takes the RB out pic.twitter.com/fus3M0PGQQ

#SomethingSpecial Mahomes saved his best fastball to beat sound coverage up the seam. Excellent anticipation and ball placement to protect Kelce as much as he could. pic.twitter.com/wZcLWFezy6
